Review of Mystery Train (1989) by Avery C — 11 Mar 2011
Although this is a three part anthology only the first story, the beautiful "Far From Yokohama", is anything special. But boy is it special.
Far From Yokohama is a portrait of a Japanese couple in Memphis to chase after their idol's Carl Perkins and Elvis. As they arrive in Memphis they realize it's far from what they expected. The sacred studio that both Perkins and Elvis recorded in is little more then a dingy room. The acting is pitch perfect by the two young Japanese actors as they take a "tour" of the studio with the guide churning out 10 words a second. This story about strangers in a strange land is magnificently captured by the masterful Jarmusch.
The next two acts "A Ghost" and "Lost in Space" are both about escaping the shadow of Elvis in a town were he's more important then God. Although both interesting stories in their own right they pale in comparison to the first act.
