Review of Mystery Train (1989) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
The first third of the movie where we follow the Japanese couple is absolutely sublime. The suitcase, the lighter trick, the headphones, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, amazing. But the second storyline with the widow is practically unbearable, Tom Noonan is the only thing that keeps it floating.
And the last storyline with Joe Strummer, Rick Aviles and Steve Buscemi doesn't really work but the coolness is cranked up to its absolute highest. While Memphis is falling apart and gritty, Jarmusch views it with a sympathetic, nostalgic eye.
