Review of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996) by Kurt Y — 02 Aug 2007
If there's a good place to start with the MST3K series, it's the somewhat botched attempt to make the series accesable as an actual movie, that mocks another movie during it.
As usual, second host Mike Nelson and his robot buddies, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot and Gypsy, live their lives in an orbital space station at the bidding of a mad scientist bent on controlling the world by forcing people to watch really bad movies. The movie this go around in the higher budget realm of being handled by a name studio is the sci-fi cheese classic 'This Island Earth' and even with the meddling and short runtime, Mike and the bots do their best to deliver a wonderfully fun twist from the show.
Despite the movies flaws, it's definitely an accessible piece for those new to the series and older fans a like. Sadly the DVD has been out of print for years, and who knows how long it'll stay that way.
