Review of Mystery Men (1999) by Sol H — 23 Mar 2010
It's surprising to see such a self-aware parody of the superhero genre from this early (the superhero boom only really started with X-Men a year later, and Spider-man cemented it the year after that). It's uneven but it has moments that are enjoyable, even if most of it is due to something being ridiculously stupid or star-spotting. The film's cast is quite something featuring Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. macy, Greg Kinnear, Tom Waits, Paul Reubens, Eddie Izzard and Kel from Kenan & Kel. They definately make it a lot more watchable than it would otherwise be.
It's passable 90s family comedy fare. Not great but I didn't mind sitting through it, although it could really have done with losing half an hour or so. 2 hours is far too long for a film like this.
Personal enjoyment: 6/10.
Actual quality as a film: 5/10.
