Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Jaclyn L — 25 Oct 2008
A brilliantly uncompromising and realistic look at the differing effects of child sexual abuse, this movie left me speechless. One of my very favorites. Araki completely divorces himself from the cheesy sensationalism which marred his earlier films.
He instead directs this one with an observational detachment that serves not only to save the disturbing story from becoming choked with melodrama, but which simultaneously highlights the emptiness which inhabits the hearts of the two abused boys.
Like the way these stories unfold in real life, there's no happy ending - only the hope which comes with confronting the truth and letting the tears flow. It's the hope that someday hearts can mend.
