Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Alan G — 15 Dec 2008
I give props to Joseph Gordon-Levitt for playing such a challenging role compared to his usual stuff. It's a tough subject matter to do a film on, and while I felt this did a good job at covering the bases, it lacked the emotional impact of what such a film could really pack.
It felt too much like a story about two kids - one of which was gay and turning tricks, the other of which thought he had been abducted by UFOs - who just happened to share an abusive past. Never in the film did I feel that their current positions in life had REALLY been the result of the horrible things that happened to them.
One just choose to not give a f--- anymore, while the other one simply couldn't remember. Other than that, they just sort of went about the lives that they had been dealt.
