Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Rufio S — 27 Sep 2009
A very powerful film, Mysterious Skin stayed with me for days after I first watched it. The direction and editing are both extraoridinary, as some of the things you think are happening actually aren't - such as the abuse scenes which seem to feature very young actors but in reality it's all a trick of clever editing.
The highest praise though has to go to the performances, especially Levitt's which is devastatingly believeable. For me, the ending seemed to rip my heart out, stomp on it several times, and then reinsert it into my chest. Sigur Ros music in the final scene just contributes to the sheer emotional wallop.
I am interested to read the book now, but also a little wary about reading such a disturbing story. That is the only thing I would say about Mysterious Skin, that it's so harsh and realistic, that watching it is not at all easy, but then child abuse is not an easy thing. I'd say if you are squeamish, easily offended or homophobic, then steer clear. On the other hand if you like interesting, challenging and relevant cinema that will probably make you cry, then give this one a go.
