Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Ceph J — 22 Jun 2011
"Mysterious Skin" is arguably about pedophilia and the long-term effects on two boys lives. However, the movie is not judgmental about any of the characters so it could be about universal survival. Joseph Gordon-Levit is mesmerizing in the central role of Neil and he's so believable that you want to hug him during those dramatic scenes. The rest of the actors are good including Elisabeth Shue as his mother, Michelle Tractenberg and Jeff Licon as his BFFs.
Not everyone will enjoy this film because it depicts child abuse and teenage prostitution but I think it's one of the best films about teenage isolation. Kudos to director Gregg Araki.
