Review of My Week with Marilyn (2011) by Chris H — 23 Jun 2012
Now I know I'm not going to be part of the majority in saying this, but I wasn't a huge fan of this movie. I don't know why but I felt little attachment to the characters, hate the protagonist every time he was with Marilyn, really didn't care about his relationship, nor did I have much investment in the plot period.
Even more so, I do love Michelle Williams. She is a great actor. But her performance of Marilyn was not Oscar worthy. Nor is any performance of Marilyn. All you do is act like a giant child. She does look just like her though.
There are two things that saved this movie for me. First, Emma Watson. She isn't in much of the movie, but her character is rather important and I could have used a little more of that. Also she is hot, but mostly the character on this one.
Secondly, Kenneth Branagh. Now he DID deliver an Oscar worthy performance in this movie as Sir Lawrence Oliver. He was amazing in a way I cannot put into words. He just was so versatile and had such range of emotions that it was amazing.
He did the most to save this movie for me. Michelle was solid and Kenneth was great. Without those two you have no movie. The story was rubbish and I hated the protagonist. Above they say 83% and Michelle shines.
That she does. But the movie does not. There is a HUGE difference.
