Review of My Week with Marilyn (2011) by Gerardo R — 09 Jul 2012
My Week with Marilyn is the frothiest of dramas, so light it barely registers, but that's all played up to its charm. Under Simon Curtis's breezy direction, the ensemble seems to have a blast playing their real-life roles, particularly Judi Dench as Sybil Thorndike, Julia Ormond's brief and moving turn as Vivien Leigh, and especially Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, a role he was destined to play at some point.
They are all very good, but the star, obviously, is Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. She not only plays Marilyn, but she might as well be her. Very rarely has an actor in a biopic channeled their character with such confidence and to such wonderful results.
Simply put, when Williams is on the screen, she glows. Oscar nomination well deserved.
