Review of My Sister's Keeper (2009) by Molly R — 05 May 2014
This story about a young girl who goes to court for permission _not_ to donate a kidney to her ill sister has potential, but that potential is lost in a clunky plot structure and some resulting continuity problems.
Strong performances by some cast members (particularly Sofia Vassilieva as the cancer-stricken sister) are undermined by overall weak chemistry between most characters. The film is told in flashbacks, but with few reference points, so it's difficult to tell when a scene is a flashback and when it's the "current day".
Continuity errors abound. Hair and characters come and go without explanation. Sub-plots involving family members are hinted at, but not developed. These distract us from the main story line, which turns out to be rather inconsequential anyway.
Some scenes are truly touching, but they arrive out of context from what comes before and after.
