I can't believe I never saw this 80's sci-fi movie!! It is right in line with Tron, The Last Starfighter, The Monster Squad, etc.. Great cheesy lines ("When you're cool the sun shines on you 24 hours a day") and classic 80s special effects (pre-Jurassic Park T-Rex).
Check out parts by Fisher Stevens (of Short Circuit fame) as the wisecracking sidekick and Dennis Hopper who plays the science teacher but then appears in the end wearing the attire of one of his most famous characters.
Even better... I got to watch this on VHS that was tapped off of old-school HBO.
