Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Robert K — 19 Jun 2008
Directed by Gus Van Sant, this is quite a charming if not altogether gloomy road movie. Michael "Flea" Balzary from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers turns in quite a good performance as a side character.
Aside from themes of friendship, sexuality, betrayal and class the film delves more into Mike's (Phoenix) background than Scott's (Reeves). Mike is the more likable character here. Except for the search for his mother, he drifts through life from one tom to another.
Scott on the other hand is awaiting his inheritance from an ill father. By the end of the film I noticed tiny scenes that are repeated throughout the movie at certain times. There are still some funny moments in what makes this an excellent film.
