Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Bettina S — 07 Aug 2008
This is one of those movies that I've wanted to see for ever and ever, because people that like movies tend to really like this film. I apparently hate movies. Keanu was refreshingly great, and River was out of this world good.
The cinematography was genius, and the subject matter broke the mold... or at least it could have. Yes this movie could have made me wet myself, what with great dialog and edgy subject matter, this movie could have been mind blowing.
By the end though, I'm left wondering what it's message is, it seemed to have too many themes, and that made it hard to take everything in, so I couldn't really define what it was trying to tell me.
I just sat on the couch afterwords, longing for Gus Van Sant to tell me I was a very dim boy who should go down to the corner store and get himself some ice cream. Movies that make me feel like I missed something don't appeal to me.
Yes it was beautiful, but it was without solid content. Which means I could have stared at a picture of Alissa Milano for 1 and three quarters hours and gotten the same effect. Everybody is entitled to an opinion sure, but if you liked this movie, you might be trying too hard.
