Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Ryan H — 12 Oct 2009
There is a lot of originality behind this. Throughout the film, I couldn't help but feel like Mysterious Skin was highly inspired by this. The story line is interesting. It feels like it's chopped in pieces sometimes, but it's not by accident.
Our protagonist, Mike, has narcolepsy, and it feels like sometimes we miss a lot of what happens just like him. We will be interested, then the pacing gets jumped around, just like the way he feels when he wakes up.
There are a lot of great shots throughout the film and interesting imagery that Van Sant experimented with. There is no doubt that this is one of his most personal films. The performances put on by Phoenix and Reeves are phenomenal.
It feels like I have so much to say about My Own Private Idaho, but I have much more to sort out through my mind. If I even started, it would probably end up being about five pages long. In short, this film is full of heart, and even in the lowest of times, we are given a little glimpse of hope.
Perhaps in our lives, it's all we can ask for.
