Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Sabrina I — 29 Jan 2011
A slightly surreal road film about two friends who take a journey to find themselves and to find 'home'. What is 'home' for Mike Waters (played wonderfully by River Phoenix)? Throughout the film we are shown flashbacks of his old house, his mother.
..he remembers 'happy times', and refuses to hear the truth about his childhood. When he goes into a narcoleptic seizure and falls asleep we are taken into his inner-most thoughts, wrought with memories and loneliness.
He is longing for love, something to hold on to - ANYTHING that would take away all the confusion. We aren't sure what exactly or who exactly he is looking for and neither is he but it's that journey that we go on with him that makes the film quite beautiful.
The breath-taking cinematography helps bring Gus Van Sant's vision to life..as the film progress we see Reeve's character changing and Phoenix's character remaining the same, it's quite sad.
The friendship between the two characters and the ending leaves quite an impression because the film is told in a personal and fresh manner.
