Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Nate J — 25 Sep 2012
Unfortunately, I essentially watched this movie with children present (although they weren't actually under 18). And Gus Van Sant's films are usually slow and thought-provoking with one determined message shining throughout.
However, I managed to catch a lot of this film, and I am impressed with how diverse this movie is. Keanu plays the same role he always does, and for me he always lacks a real sustainable character. However, the saviour of this movie (and everything else he appeared in) is River Phoenix.
He is such an awkward yet powerful character, that the viewer is drawn to him and invests in him. This movie has all the usual traits a Van Sant film generally contains, which also makes for great fun trying to spot how many.
Great movie, well worth the watch.
