Review of My Name Is Bruce (2007) by Steven N — 07 Mar 2009
As much as I enjoy a good Bruce Campbell flick, this campy spoof of Bruce Campbell flicks doesn't really work for me. In the film Bruce plays a quasi-version of himself. The inhabitants of a small town are being picked off by an angry demon, and a local boy kidnaps the guy who's smashed more demons than a demon smashing machine set on smash - Bruce Campbell.
I completely understand the movie is supposed to be corny. I recognize that it's supposed to look goofy, and made badly, but there are limits of corniness that even I can stand, and "My Name is Bruce" reaches them.
There are some decent jokes there and there, but most of them fall flat, and the ending veers off into something that doesn't work at all. I'm not saying this is a "bad" movie necessarily, because it's not - completely.
There is however more bad than good going on, and I find it hard to justify recommending it to even the most diehard Bruce fans out there. Instead of watching a poorly made spoof of "Evil Dead," and similar films, why not just watch the real thing instead? Makes perfect sense to me.
