As a fan of the show, this is a great addition to the rich world. And while I agree that fans of the show will get the most out of it, it is a great standalone animated film with a lot of comedic moments, great characters, some strong emotional moments, and good music and animation.
Would definitely recommend it for families even if you are not familiar with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
