Review of My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) by Brony D — 21 Nov 2017
My Little Pony: The Movie is a movie based on the show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, based on the toys from Hasbro. The Movie is about the Mane 6 traveling outside of equestria to meet new friends along the way while the villains are wreaking havoc across ponyville.
The film is hands down the best animated movie of 2017. It is everything I wanted the movie to be. If you have not seen the film, go watch it, especially if you are a brony.
First off, the visuals and the animation for this movie is beautiful, especially the fact that we don't get a lot of 2D animated movies on the big screen; the buttery smooth animation reminds me of a Don Bluth Film. The movie also shows what 2D animation software can actually do. Yes, the software they use for the film is Toon Boom Harmony, the same animation software used for The Simpsons and Spongebob Sqarepants: Sponge Out of Water. If you ask me, they should use Toon Boom for their show from now on.
The story may not be the best I've seen from an animated movie; it could be cliche at times, but for what it is, it was very good. I found the Mane 6 to be just as likable in the movie as they are in the show; the voice actors for the show as always, doing great. I also found the supporting characters and villains to be likable as well, especially Tempest Shadow and Captain Celano.
The Songs for this movie is awesome; it's catchy, inspirational, and all around fun! Of course, it's all poppy, bubble gummy crap, but what do you expect? This is My Little Pony we're talking about! Not to mention that Kristen Chenoweth (Voice of Princess Skystar), Taye Diggs (Voice of Capper), Zoe Saldana (Voice of Captain Celano), and Emily Blunt (Voice of Tempest Shadow) did great with the songs they are singing. Plus Sia's song fits the movie very well, and reminds me of Shakira's Try Everything from Zootopia. (Sia is one of the writers for Try Everything, so it makes sense).
The movie hits the nail on the head for its humor; there are a lot of belly laughs that I have for the movie's humor, especially from Pinkie Pie, and new characters from the movie like Grubber, Capper, and The Storm King, and some funny moments from Queen Novo.
If there is one thing I would have to criticize this movie for, is the pacing. While the story is good, the movie feels like it's rushed at times.
Here are the pros and cons for the movie:
Pros:
Visual/Animation.
Songs.
Story.
Humor.
The Characters.
Cons:
The movie feels like it's rushed.
My Little Pony: The Movie is absolutely fantastic; I can't wait to be immersed into their world again. If you are a brony, you will love it!
My Recommendation: Go out and see the movie now!
