Review of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (2013) by John H — 23 Jun 2013
This could have been much worse than it was. Overall, it is a lighthearted movie aimed (even moreso than the show) at a largely female audience with the one exception being its age demography being set at roughly 8-13 years rather than 8+.
The story was much like the show, well composed with many things to discover even in repeat viewings and a great number of nods made such that longtime fans can reap just a little bit more off the top without excluding first-timers.
The boss scene (a much more titanic event than I had thought) is resolved, in the MLP way, with hardly any effort or care on behalf of the writing staff; but is a blemish on an otherwise expertly crafted piece.
Although not chocked full of all-around fun, I would suggest this movie for literally anyone who has invested enough as to have seen all three seasons of the show as well as those in the target demography and anyone with a daughter/niece/etc nearing the double digits.
