Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Bobby L — 08 Oct 2007
Worth a watch, but rather lacking in parts. It's hard to pinpoint what it was that leaves me unsatisfied, but it could be the fact that this Bar-Lev's execution was so easily unraveled by one event during filming (60 Minutes).
It reveals to the viewer that Bar-Lev wasn't on the scene to record the story as it unfolds. He was there to satiate his curiosity. When the story evolved before his eyes, he didn't know how to continue telling the story that he had envisioned.
While many reviews state that the film is left open-ended, it is very clearly stated in the film, by the himself, that he doubts the girl paints the work unassisted. While it helps the film immensely that the gentleman from the NYT was so eloquent, it suffers immensely from an over reliance on both the local columnist from Binghampton and the director's own editorial.
Shouldn't the turning point in the story arc be provided by the film subjects and not the director filming himself in his car, saying that his faith in his own film has been shaken? All in all, this was an interesting film, but very flawed.
