Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Chandra L — 21 May 2008
Very interesting doc about art, people, and their perceptions of art and eachother. I think there is less of a question here about what is art than there is about age discrimination. Everyone wants to say that her work is not real art and that someone must have helped her do it simply because she is a child and that's wrong.
She does what she does for all the same reasons that any other acclaimed abstract artist does, whether it be the sort that focuses on abstraction of actual images and uses some figurative painting or the sort that bases the work solely on the process and materials.
Everything she does is a valid form of what is considered to be real modern abstract art. Just because she is 4 doesn't mean it isn't anything. And it also doesn't mean she is a prodigy. She just happens to be the one child who is out there painting these things who has her work hung in a gallery.
Maybe everyone should look at their kids' fingerpaintings in a new light and realize that they are all just as good.
