Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Tio B — 29 Aug 2009
Interesting doc that raises as much question about modern art as it does about overenthusiastic parenting.
The central question of the film is whether these grand modern art pieces were, in fact, painted by 4 year old Marla or if they were aided by her father (who just happens to be a failed artist himself).
The main issue I have with the film is the main issue that causes the original dilemma...when your documentary subjects are so aware of the presence of the camera...how are you truly capturing a real life situation? Marla is so keen to the fact that the camera is there that her behavior changes and she, according to her parents, 'never paints like this when cameras are here'.
The doc presents both sides of the debate while also struggling to make its own decision. It's obvious the filmmaker was conflicted and it shows. He's attached to this family who has given him a lot of trust by letting him into their home. Does he dig deep to expose the paintings as false or does he work to clear their name. That's for you to see.
