Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Dave C — 09 Dec 2008
A simple documentary that raises a wide variety of interesting questions. This movie documents 4-year old Marla Olmstead's rapid ascent to fame for her abstract art compositions, which are immediately compared to abstract greats such as Jackson Pollack.
Trouble ensues however when a 60 Minutes episode profiles Marla and questions how much of her painting is true genius, or even hers. The movie brings up lots of complex issues, including parenting a child prodigy and questioning abstract art as 'true art'.
But the real villian in the film is the media, who after growing tired with the Marla success story seemed destined to find fault with the situation to make the news story 'new'. Will make you think twice about exposing your child to any media outlets.
