Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Gabriel C — 09 May 2008
I love films where people simply talk about abstract ideas. There is a certain joy in seemingly eavesdropping on intelligent people communicate. I enjoyed this film like I would enjoy a conversation in real life, except here I can also objectively judge the characters involved.
Of the two people in the film, one is pretentious and self-indulgent and the other a mediocre, insecure man. Neither are as strong or confident as they try to make out to be, nor are they intelligent or particularly insightful.
However, their conversation reveals layers of thinking and inspiration, and is mostly very interesting to watch. Nice.
