Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by John J — 18 Aug 2008
Whether or not one enjoys My Dinner with Andre is surely a matter of taste. Two middle-aged men meet at a posh New York restaurant for dinner, one a successful stage director and the other a not-so-successful playwright and actor.
They order their meal and talk...and talk...and talk. Nothing really "happens", the whole film is about a conversation that rambles on for all of 110 minutes. They discuss, argue and pontificate and are by turns witty, exasperating and profound.
What I enjoyed most about this film though is the on-screen bonhomie between Andre Greogry and Wallace Shawn (these are also their names in the movie), two old friends who, after all these years, still continue to charm, interest and challenge one another.
More than anything else, this is a film about empathy and the abiding values of friendship.
