Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Michael R — 17 Jul 2009
Watched My Dinner with Andre again 28 years after its premiere. It was as enjoyable as the first time and just as strange an experience. The movie is about two men, Wally Shawn and Andre Gregory, playing characters named Wally Shawn and Andre Gregory, having dinner and talking.
That's it. But after it's over you'll swear it included scenes of religious rituals in Polish forests, Long Island beaches and Scottish communes, but it doesn't. However, Andre's stories of his journey to find meaning in life as wonderfully visual and compelling.
Wally spends most of the movie in quiet amazement but rises at the end to defend his life in all its wonderful ordinariness. I can't think of any movie quite like it.
