Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Andres B — 20 Jun 2012
I don't think anyone could ever sum up what this film means to that person in a whole book, let alone one paragraph, because the truth is the magnificence of this film was truly overwhelming. There are obvioulsy so many different themes tackled in the film and shot with a subtle beauty by Louis Malle, but I think my favorite aspect of the film is how it focuses on human relationships as the difference between someone who is really alive, and someone who is really dead and oblivious.
Like Wallace Shawn's character says, it shouldn't be necessary to go climb Mount Everest to have an epiphany on what is true and meaningful in one's life. I completely agree. One can find this watching some natural spectacle just as much as having an intimate moment with another real human being with whom one shares a connection with, such as in this film.
