Review of My Bloody Valentine (2009) by Tj B — 05 Aug 2010
This is an entertaining throwback to classic 80s slashers that doesn't take itself too seriously and focuses more on crazy kills over story but surprisingly, My Bloody Valentine is better for it and I thought it was pretty darn solid.
The story is basically a combination of a bunch of 80s slashers and while it is mindless and the writing is pretty medicore; it still had a couple of interesting twists and I liked the ending of the movie.
The performances are what I expected; nothing amazing but they all do a respectable job. Jensen Ackles is good as the lead; I like this guy from Supernatural and he does a fine job in the role of Tom.
Jaime King is nice to look at and Kerr Smith is solid as well. My Bloody Valentine is true to it's name as it is indeed, bloody as hell; the kills are gory and really cool (shame I missed this one in 3D; probably would have been worth it) and the direction keeps things tight and tense with lots of shots that made me think of Friday the 13th.
Overall, My Bloody Valentine isn't a revolutionary horror movie; the story isn't great and the pacing is a little choppy but hell, the movie was fun to watch and had a bunch of gory kills and that's what I expect out of a slasher flick.
