Review of My Bloody Valentine (2009) by James W — 21 Mar 2014
Spectacularly violent and consistently bloody, My Bloody Valentine 3D is a fantastic slasher movie that cranks up the tension superbly as each scene comes around. The cast are excellent, especially Jaime King whose facial expressions of terror are very unsettling, and Jensen Ackles plays a brilliant psychopath towards the ending, there's a moment where I genuinely thought he went complete psycho.
The great aspect of this movie compared to other slashers is that the murders aren't just thrown in to total up the body count, they are there to freak you out and keep you guessing is Harry Warden still alive, or is someone taking over the miner mask? Most modern slashers just add in poorly constructed characters just so they can kill them off, instead My Bloody Valentine makes you dig for the characters, they feel fully fleshed out and aren't just disposable blood bags.
Not only is the story well constructed, the film is nicely shot and the 3D is excellent. Each character is slashed in a gruesome 3D manner, axes literally come out the screen and body parts fling towards the viewer making you flinch.
I definitely recommend this movie, it's bloody good fun and the whole movie is enhanced by the stunning and playful 3D effects and bolstered down by a committed cast.
