Review of My Bloody Valentine (1981) by Ryan B — 30 Mar 2009
Better than average 80s slasher flick that plays with many of the conventions of the genre. The characters are less interchangeable than in most of its contemporaries, and are working class young adults rather than teenagers. The movie was made in a real mine on the east coast, which makes it quite distinguishable from its peers.
Acting is not bad for this sort of movie and the kills are fairly inventive. This film suffered greatly at the hands of the MPAA, but the new DVD that came out to capitalize on the remake restores some of the deleted scenes.
I think because I saw the remake first I found the mystery surrounding the killer's identity pretty interesting (as it is a bit different in this movie).
Finally, there is a theme song that plays over the credits that it out of this world.
