Review of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) by Lewis E — 05 Jul 2013
Wouldn't usually think of watching this but my mum had it on DVD and there is only so much you can do in the house before you resort to these measures. Like most standard rom-coms, you know how its going to end but this one concerns more the girl's conflict between her own individual identity with that of the traditional Greek female role encouraged by her father.
I'm hardly ever interested in the romance side of a rom-com so for me, it better be funny. Unfortunately, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' has some of the weakest jokes known to mankind. I doubt not much time had been spent constructing the humour, probably only ever intending it to be a mediocre side dish to the main romance/culture dilemma.
The Greek family are colourful and lovable bunch while the portrayed importance of family, culture and heritage might put a smile on your face. However, there is not enough substance in the story or the comedy to make it worth your effort.
This is clearly one for the elders if anybody but don't worry if you haven't seen it, you are not missing out.
