Review of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016) by Soybeanarson — 25 Mar 2016
Fantastic! I am not a fan of the romantic comedy genre in general, but years ago I fell in love with the first "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". It was Honest, funny, and organic, and the characters felt like real humans.
Fast forward to the sequel. I saw the previews and was very worried. Was this going to be a wilder, shmultzyer re-hash of the first movie devoid of its heart in favor of cheap laughs? After watching it in the theater, let me assure you it is not.
The same honesty, humor and heart that made the first movie special is intact, but told in an entirely different story, exploring people who have moved to very different parts of their life, have grown, but remain recognizable.
Though it helps to have seen the first movie just to see the organic growth of the characters (and really you should see the first one just because it's great), this one easily stands on its own. The characters are equal parts bombastic and relateable.
It emphasizes that tradition is important, but that change is good, and not to be feared. It walks the line between the importance of close family relationships and also having the courage and independence to strike out on your own and take command of your life.
In short, there was not a thing about this movie I didn't like. If you liked the first one, this one will melt you, in a good way. If you never saw the first one, you will still find plenty to enjoy here.
See it.
