Review of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016) by Tracy B — 15 Nov 2016
Is this a masterpiece? No. Is it as bad as some say? Definitely not. Maybe It's because I always expect sequels not to be as good as the originals, but I really enjoyed it. It didn't require any effort but it wasn't boring or painful.
Some characters have grown and others were given new dimension. It's the kind of movie I like to watch to cheer me up when I'm home with the flu or feeling a bit sad, and it works. Vardalos left the door open for a third one.
If she does go ahead, I do hope she makes some changes to her usual formulas. The first one was fantastic, the second one was a nice, funny movie following a clear path left by the previous one. However, if the third film is to be any good, Vardalos needs to add new components and a few unexpected twists if she wants to avoid making a straight-out bad film because she's clearly exhausted the old ones with the second.
Again, I really enjoyed this film, I will watch it again (and again) because it's not a masterpiece, but it does leave me with a nice warm feeling inside.
