Review of My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) by Janet O — 06 Apr 2008
A cultural and class struggle with just enough intricacies to keep it interesting. It's more worthwhile nowadays for Daniel Day Lewis in an early role, and he's completely adorable here. It's also heralded, rightly so, for its place in queer cinema, as it treats its characters' sexualities with openness, without forced drama, and as only a fraction of who they are.
It's dated to be sure and by no means revelatory, but solidly performed and socially relevant.
