Review of My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) by Lydia B — 24 May 2008
Johnny/Omar forevah, y'all.
Seriously, though, considering when this was made, I was impressed by how the issue of homosexuality was portrayed so sensitively and without being a plot device. It was all but secondary, in fact, to the much more overt issues of race and class which the film explores.
It felt a bit like a play-on-screen (I was surprised to find that it wasn't originally a play, actually) in terms of script and acting, but it's definitely worth watching, if only for Daniel Day-Lewis's totally amazing hair. :D.
