Review of My All American (2015) by Greg B — 19 Nov 2015
"My All American" is based on the true story of Freddie Steinmark, a collegiate safety who played for the Texas Longhorns in the late 60's. Steinmark was diagnosed with bone cancer in his leg, which led to an early demise to his football career.
I found the film poignant and sentimental, but it is also plagued by derivative sports movie clichés that hold down the plot. Every element of the comeback story is present, so I cannot say that this film differs from any other underdog story I've seen.
It is also extremely corny and way too cookie-cutter for my liking. I thought the film was honest, but it is too full of schmaltzy, gift-wrapped candy corn and "niceness" to be a legitimate sports film.
Aaron Eckhart also feels stale as the infamous coach Royal who discovered Steinmark. If you go in with low expectations, you will probably enjoy this movie, but don't expect it to reinvent the wheel ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C+.
