Review of Mutual Appreciation (2005) by Andrew B — 07 Aug 2007
This film is certainly not for everyone. It was made for very little money, has very little plot, and a lot of talking. That can be torture. I have seen movies like that which are torture. This movie: I loved every moment.
There's a lot of subtext. The plot moves forward in subtext. But it does move forward. People talk like people talk and act like people act. Some would say: well why go to a movie then? But there are moments where you go, "People really do that!" There are things you notice watching this movie that sometimes you miss when you see it in life.
It helps you understand the people around you a bit better. It is, in short, naturalism at its finest.
