Review of Mutual Appreciation (2005) by D. Aaron S — 15 Apr 2008
Very naturalistic, so much so that I was surprised to hear that there was actually a script written. It's basically just a dude trying to be a serious musician, while admiring a girl thats going out with his BFF.
But explaining the film like that would seem to imply that it is plot-driven, which it is not. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think its point is its naturalism. I liked a few key scenes. The scene where the dude's drunkly hanging out with the wig-wearing chicks is probably the most comical scene.
The whole love triangle thing inspired some awkwardness from me with the character's awkwardness within. I felt like I could relate. And I liked the dude's idea of a "cool, inclusive club" that consists of people all trying to do something, knowing that they are all trying to do something.
It's interesting because it's really just a mindset, but it's almost as if its such an unattainable mindset, knowing that we're all united in some way, that he has to form an artificial "club.
" That may be thinking too much into it, but that was my own interpretation.
