Review of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) by Joshua G — 16 Jun 2008
This film stars Charles Laughton in my favorite sea-going movie captain role. As Bligh he drives not only his crew but the viewer as well to cry out for his downfall. Such wickedness in his character gives the audience no choice but to root for Fletcher Christian and his mutineers to cast their commander off at the height of their rebellion.
That's what makes this movie so good in my book, that it can build so much hatred in the viewer towards a single character that it makes the illegal mutiny against them seems so right. Clark Gable does very well in his out-of-character and out-of-moustache portrayal of Christian and Franchot Tone makes an extremely affable Ensign Byam.
