Review of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) by Sean M — 16 Jun 2012
I love this adventure from Lloyd. It isn't much of a spectacle but it's a wild ride of flaring tempers, floggings, native girls, and of course, MUTINY! The film is not so much about mutiny but about basic humanity.
A question that has journeyed with us through the centuries is the conflict between the orders of a superior and the conscience of a man. Which superceeds which? This question can be found in religious organizations, the military, and the workplace.
What do we do when we believe our superiors are monsters and must be stopped? What can we do when our moral code goes in the face of our obedience? This is what Frank Lloyd is getting at. The strong performances of Gable, Laughton, and Franchot Tone as Byam are all paramount to the films strength in telling this brutal, tragic and yet redeeming tale upon the high seas.
