Review of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) by Praveen P — 02 Aug 2008
The first hour was long-winded: sadly, I see no two ways about that. I wish it had been condensed, or even elided. However, once the movie got into its stride, it was an incredible movie. Laughton somehow made his Blight both monstrous and sympathetic, a combination that is highly quixotic.
Gable, at his peak in the 30s, of course delivered a tour de force, and the supporting cast was each so memorable, that unlike many movies of the era with a large cast, I had little trouble telling characters apart.
If only they could do something about that first hour...
