Review of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) by Steve H — 27 Aug 2018
AFI 100 Greatest Films - #86: 4* for this well acted and excellently paced action/adventure. I keep finding it hard to rate the films from the AFI list because when rating in the context of the era they were released I would often be left blown away, with nothing but 5* ratings.
Gable was the name I recognized going in, and while very good, I was actually more impressed with Laughton's Captain Bligh. I also appreciated Franchot Tone's portrayal of Byam, and along with his monologue towards the conclusion, I enjoyed his conversations with Hitihiti very much.
This film should clearly not be viewed as any kind of accurate portrayal of history or culture yet can still be easily enjoyed due to the well timed trajectory of the plot and multiple outstanding performances.
