Review of Mute Witness (1995) by David H — 25 Oct 2007
The first fifty minutes are absolutely brilliant. The tension and suspense are created so well, that a spectator finds one's self staring wide-eyed, unblinking, unmoving at the screen. It's awesome.
Sadly, after this point the film falls completely apart. Waller shouldn't have made this a ring of snuff filmmakers, but rather kept it contained to a very small number without a real hierarchy. Because expanding things out like that and suddenly adding so many silly twists and turns fifty minutes in REALLY decreases the fear factor and turns things ridiculous fast.
The direction is good, if sometimes a little too enthusiastic (like the rapid cut-ins to fear-filled eyes that look extremely stupid), and the acting really isn't that bad. Still, it falls apart almost completely, and that's really too bad.
