Review of Mutant Chronicles (2008) by Karen S — 05 Aug 2009
As a film I won't lie to you and say this movie's great. But it appeals to my geeky interests so I liked it. If the description I give tickles your fancy I bet you'd enjoy it too.
Every scene's an action scene. It's what a live action Heavy Metal movie would be like. It's based on a pen and paper RPG I'd hardly heard of before. It's pretty much a zombie flick but set in future steampunk WW1 (kinda like Resistance) with a Holy Roman Church as the keeper of the Mutant Chronicles. The titular book tells of man's enemy (which's an alien machine). The priest's red robe reminds me of a techpriest's garments.
This is the kind of movie you'd expect to see in the 80s. I'm surprised it got the budget and cast it did (John Malkovich has a supporting role). There're plot holes so big paying attention to them's like staring into the abyss but I pardon them.
Devon Aoki plays her character too sweet to be believed as a killer.
The movie does a good job of giving every cast member some characterization.
You can tell a lot of the filming was done with green screens and the sets were digitally added.
This movie's grim.
