Review of Mutant Chronicles (2008) by Gilles A — 26 Aug 2009
23rd Century AD: Earth is devistated as 4 corporations battle for supremacy in a war reminiscent of World War I. A battle in Eastern Europe unearths an ancient device and unleashes an army of mutants. Within 6 weeks Earth is almost overrun and the planet is being evacuated. Brother Samuel guided by an ancient text, The Mutant Chronicles, gathers a small strikeforce for a suicide mission to turn the tide and save Earth.
Fuck, what a dissapointment. Ditches most of the source material. Like the worst slasher movies we're introduced to a bunch of characters we're never given time to know or care abvout before watching them die, unintrestingly. Fight scenes are chaotic in a bad way. The look of the film is interesting, but the acting across the board is bland. Thomas Jane, does a deceint job of uttering his one liner (I don't get paid to believe, I get paid to fuck shit up) but for some reason his character seems to be off in his own little world most of the time. Sean Pertwee does nothing and has no reason for his character to be in this film, Devon Aoki mostly stands around, stabs a few mutants at the end, even Ron Perlman seems to be phoning it in. Benno Furmans character could have been intresting but again he's given nothing to do. The only praise worthy performance is John Malkovich's CEO (again an interesting under used character, prolly should make a prequal focusing on Malkovich's character). Fans of sci-fi may get some enjoymeny out of it, but there's really not much to recommend, watch it late at night on the Sci-Fi channel.
