Review of Mutant Chronicles (2008) by Elena S — 05 Dec 2010
A relatively good watch for fans of the mutant and doomsday genre. With a cast that doesn't have much of an acting reputation, Thomas Jane (of "Punisher" fame) and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy" himself) lead a bunch of others on a suicide mission, to save the Earth from being taken over by mutants.
The story revolves around how an alien machine came down upon the Earth with hostile intentions - of turning humankind into soulless, marauding creatures. The machine, buried under the ground by heroes of yore is disturbed and unleashed during a war in the 28th century - an age when the world is ruled not by governments, but by corporations.
A man of faith, Brother Samuel (Ron Perlman) convinces the leader of the corporations, Constantine (John Malkovich) to give him a ship and a handful of daredevil soldiers, including Major Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) so he can follow the Chronicles, a book that predicts the end of the machine by one man.
And so they ensue upon their doomed mission.
The ups of the movie are it's premise and the way the doomed cities and skylines are visualized. There is plenty of blood splattering with the mutants around, but it does makes for some moderately good thrills.
All in all it's a good popcorn-muncher for a lazy weekend.
