Review of Mustang (2015) by Amilcar A — 24 Jan 2016
Turkey is such a fascinating country. It's a place with 8000 years of history, tons of influence from all over the world and somehow they manage to be stuck in a perpetual funk. This is a country of contrasts and contradictions. There are metropolis that are modern and tolerant and there's a massive component that is backwards and provincial.
Mustang is a very beautiful, irritating and infuriating depiction of this world. This is a story about 5 21st century sisters that have the misfortune to live in rural Turkey with their grandmother and abusive uncle. These are kids that anywhere in the developed world would have thrived and yet they are stuck in a dead end of arranged marriages, abuse and stupidity.
I loved this movie and I hope they do well in the Oscars. It takes a lot for me to really hate characters and Mustang did it to perfection.
