Review of Music for Millions (1944) by Michael T — 30 May 2014
I honestly had never heard of this movie before I saw it the other night on TCM. I'm not a huge June Allyson fan, always playing the teary 'swell' girl-next-door to the extreme. But in this movie she was enchanting and it worked.
But what really hooked me was Marsha Hunt. What a beautiful woman and great actress she was. The supporting female cast is also excellent, especially the whimsical Marie Windsor and the sultry Katherine Balfour.
Jose Iturbi plays essentially himself perfectly along with Durante and a cast of well-known character actors. I did not think the ending was predictable, was surprised and shed a happy tear at the end.
The music and the character interaction were great. O'Brien may have been a tad over the top, but it still worked better than had she been more low-keyed. Seriously considering buying the DVD.
